Depression Depression Basics

Some forms of depression are seasonal

There are lots of reasons why people get depressed during the winter, but some people routinely experience mood changes only during the winter months and recover in the spring. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is characterized by recurrent episodes of depression triggered by seasonal variations of light. Symptoms include sleeping longer hours, mood changes, carbohydrate cravings, weight gain, fatigue, mental confusion and other symptoms. Once the winter season is over, the symptoms of depression disappear.
