Osteoporosis Prevention
Calcium and Vitamin D Supplements may not Prevent Fractures.
While experts often tout the importance of taking calcium and vitamin D supplements to prevent the bone-weakening effects of osteoporosis, a recent study has shown that supplements of these minerals may provide only a small amount of protection against bone fractures. Researchers followed 36,000 middle-aged women between the ages of 50 and 79 who took these dietary supplements. At the end of seven years, the risk of hip fractures was only slightly reduced in the women who used the supplements as compared to women who did not. The study, published in the
New England Journal of Medicine
, also noted that the supplements significantly increased the risk of kidney stones in women who take them.
